Alright Moms, You are not the only one who has at least one kid who when told to do something start saying “Well so and so’s mother doesn’t make him have any responsibilities so why cant you be more like her” ! And then you end up being like the “Mean Mom” Well… thats just fine. You can take it. You can take it because u don’t want your children to turn into those “supposed adults” sitting on their butts doing nothing productive and making a dozen lame excuses as to why they don’t want this job or that job AND I KNOW I KNOW some of YOU “supposed adults” reading this right now are thinking “Umm.. she’s obviously not talking about me”! because I have like a legitamate excuse for why Mommy & Daddy pay for everything while I daydream myself waiting for my dream employer to knock on my door – I mean my parents – door and offer me my dream job and get paid alot of money to only do things i really love doing. No. Just No.
See heres the thing parents! We bring this cute little baby home and its completely helpless so our instinct is to do everything for it which is good…thats great, thats how it should be… but then this cute little baby Grows and Evolves and (maybe) our behaviour towards him should also Grow and Evolve and Stop treating someone who is no longer helpless like they’re still helpless. So sometimes you’re The Bad Guy, because you don’t give your kids every little thing they want and they have responsibilities..like real humans.
Because I don’t want my kids to grow thinking that everyone is going to do everything for them and just like we eventually teach our children to wipe their own butt maybe we should teach them to do other things for themselves too! Like laundry or cooking! (Now lets just be honest we all know that cooking with our kids make for greater mess) Yes!! BUT IT WILL also make for greater human.
“But Mom I just dont’ feel like it!” Well… I don’t feel like going grocery shopping today or ever! But if i don’t we’re all gonna starve to death and i don’t feel like unclogging the toilet for the third time this week, but if I don’t you will be pooping in the backyard and picking it up urself! See sometimes we do things we don’t feel like doing and we suck it up and we do it anyway. Because thats why we’re alive kid. We choose to be Responsible Decent People instead of entitled whiny brats. SweetHeart.
Letting my kids have zero responsibilities doesn’t make me a nice mommy who loves them. No. Teaching them not to be lazy and not to expect everyone to just cater to them, that makes me a nice mommy. Who loves them.
I’m not gonna baby my unbaby children. I am going to do my best, to prepare them to be self sufficient, to live a productive life.
